Piezo Injector High-Pressure Flow Testing

What to Expect Piezo Injector Cleaning
Whether your Piezo injectors are dirty or clogged, our premium injector cleaning and flow testing service delivers manufacturer-level static and dynamic testing on state of the art precision computer-controlled benches and includes all required replacement parts, O-rings, seals etc.
- If we determine the injectors is bad electrically or mechanically before we begin cleaning and testing we will call you, let you know and refund you the service cost of that injector.
- An injector’s condition is determined through approximately two hours of labor, including computer-controlled, high-pressure flow testing. The results provide a valid, data-driven assessment of the injector’s condition and performance.
- Unlike port injectors, Piezo injectors are cleaned first and then tested; they are not pre-tested.
- We do service pre index 12 injectors, however, upgrading to newer injectors may be a better course of action.

Piezo Injector Cleaning
- After addressing the concerns and what ifs surrounding the realities of these various injectors, all said, we consistently achieve better results than most thanks to our unique cleaning procedures.
- We consistently achieve better Piezo Injector cleaning results thanks to our unique cleaning procedures. It’s not uncommon for injectors that undergo traditional cleaning methods; including non-leaking units; to still perform poorly on testing. However, employing our proprietary chemicals with our air-injected cleaning process and POWERFLUSH treatment, those same injectors often snap right back into the proper flow corridors. It does not happen every time, but it does happen far more frequently than not.
- Injectors can still occasionally fail even after our extensive cleaning procedures, typically due to weak or damaged coils, internal wear or weakened return springs. If this occurs, you can be confident it is not the result of inadequate cleaning procedures.

Piezo Injector Testing Pressure Requirements
- These injectors operate at extremely high pressures of 1200-2500 PSI. Our Carbon Zapp GDR-X test bench, featuring computer-controlled fluid temperature management executes manufacturer-specific injector flow test plans and supports pressures up to 5,000 PSI exclusively for Piezo injector testing. To help ensure success, we employ proprietary cleaning procedures.
- Each injector is evaluated according to manufacturer test plans against the injectors part number to ensure OEM-level accuracy with up to 10 precision computer controlled tests per injector on our specialized GDI test bench.
- These injectors may require piezo stack regeneration, which involves applying precise pressure and voltage according to injector-specific test protocols available only on specialized equipment.
- Without the ability to replicate correct pressure, actuation, sealing, and spray conditions, any flow or leak results are invalid. Meaningful, accurate results requires specialized equipment designed specifically for direct injectors, not eyeballs and looking at the spray pattern at 90 psi on a port injector machine.
- Port injection test machines provide no meaningful evidence of injector flow performance and can lead to false diagnoses, incorrectly identifying faulty injectors as good, click the button to see an example in the video.

Piezo Injectors and Leaking
BMW Piezo injectors are prone to leaking more than virtually any other injector type, even index 12’s. Mercedes Piezo injectors are far less prone to leaking.
This service is geared toward all Mercedes Piezo injectors and BMW Index 11 & 12 injectors. We see unusable injector failure rates of 10% with BMW Index 12 injectors and higher failure rates with Index 11. We do not recommend service for Index 10 or lower due to a lower success rate, though we will attempt it if you send them in as you request, hope for best expect the worst on those. We have however successfully recovered many sets of Index 8’s -10’s so its not impossible, the cleaning procedures are paramount on those is all.
- If you have BMW Index 12 Continental (Siemens VDO) fuel injectors for a BMW N54, N63, N74 or S63 that need cleaning, we can help, but it’s important to understand the realities of these injectors. While Index 12 injectors are the latest revision, they are not problem-free piezoelectric injector technology; despite being impressive and advanced; they have still proven less reliable than expected and still suffer from higher failure rates than we see with GDI injectors.
- *An important note for all Piezo injectors, just because an injector “fails” one or two tests does not necessarily mean it is unusable; it depends on the degree of the failure. We encourage you to review the “How to Read GDI & Piezo Injector Test Reports” section below, which includes a sample report and detailed explanations to help you understand what you’ll be seeing.
- In fact, even Piezo injectors with slight weeping can pass the performance tests.
- We offer no guarantee on longevity, as injector performance after reinstallation is beyond our control and failures can occur at any time.

Porsche, Mercedes & BMW Piezoelectric Stack Regeneration
- Regenerating piezo stacks without a clear need is a bad idea, yet most if not all shops do it. Stack regeneration should only be performed under specific conditions. Offering it as a paid “optimization” or part of the service on injectors that already test good is a reliable way to return an injector in worse condition than before the procedure. Piezo stack regeneration can be useful, but only when the proper criteria are met—and injectors that test good are not one of those conditions. Stack regeneration requires careful thought and analysis before being performed; and that’s exactly what we do.
- Claims that piezo stack regeneration “restores injectors to OEM specifications” or “broadly improves performance” are gross misrepresentations. Stack regeneration is not intended to restore functionality or make piezo injectors perform better when installing used ones. It serves a specific purpose, but that is not it.
- We will review the test results and identify the specific results to determine whether it is necessary or not. Pre-Index 11 injectors will never receive it, while some Index 11 and newer injectors may, depending on the findings.
- Watch this video below, to see results where we turn a perfectly good shop injector progressively worse and then fail by simply regenerating the stack incrementally in 2 stages when this injector was not a candidate for stack regeneration.

Piezo Injector Tagging
- Tracking and reinstalling injectors correctly is essential for optimal functionality.
- Whether Mercedes as shows or BMW, mark each injector with its cylinder number using a Sharpie and masking tape tag or something similar unless your tracking it with the coefficient numbers. Writing on the injector with a sharpie will rub off during shipping.
- We are not responsible if we do not not find your numbering. it is easier and far more reliable to use a strip of painters tape with a sharpie number.
- These injectors come with flow rate coding values. Those offset values per injector are input into the Engine Management system (DME) corresponding to the engine cylinder number. Unless you plan on doing DME changes you will need to put them back in the original cylinder.
- If you replace piezo injectors with new or used injectors, you must code them to the Engine Control Module (ECM), also known as the Digital Motor Electronics (DME). This is a mandatory programming step, and failure to do so can cause serious engine issues and damage.

How to Read GDI & Piezo Injector Test Reports
These injectors generate performance reports with unique terminology. To help make sense of them, we created a guide to understanding GDI & Piezo flow test reports. There will be 1 numbered report per injector and will be electronically delivered to your email.
